Types of semiconductor

Semiconductors are materials with properties that lie between those of conductors and insulators. There are two main types of semiconductors: intrinsic and extrinsic.

Intrinsic semiconductors are pure semiconductors, typically made of silicon or germanium. These materials have a very small number of free charge carriers, which are primarily electrons and holes generated by thermal excitation. At room temperature, only a small fraction of atoms in an intrinsic semiconductor are ionized, meaning there are relatively few free charge carriers available for conduction.

Extrinsic semiconductors are doped semiconductors, where small amounts of impurities are intentionally added to the crystal lattice to increase the number of charge carriers. Two common types of extrinsic semiconductors are n-type and p-type.

N-type semiconductors are doped with donor atoms, such as phosphorus, which have an extra electron compared to the host semiconductor material. These donor atoms create additional free electrons in the crystal lattice, increasing the conductivity of the material.

P-type semiconductors are doped with acceptor atoms, such as boron, which have one less electron than the host semiconductor material. These acceptor atoms create additional holes (positively charged absence of electrons) in the crystal lattice, allowing for the movement of positive charge carriers.

By manipulating the doping and properties of semiconductors, electronic devices such as diodes, transistors, and integrated circuits can be created. The ability to control the flow of charge carriers in semiconductors is essential for the functionality of modern electronics and technology.
